Fatso – Movie Review

Some fine actors, who know how to look at home even when placed in outlandish circumstances, carry this quaint tale of love, death, separation, resurrection and reparation to the level of a fairly engaging comedy. Films about near-death and... Read more...
Tezz – Movie Review

What do you do when a country, a culture and their purveyors wrong you irreparably? You plant a bomb in a speeding train and hold the establishment to ransom. Taking a cue from Hollywood’s most watched bomb-maro-bomb rush-hour excursions into... Read more...
Hate Story – Movie Review

Meet the newest avatar of Maa Kali! The fascist avenging woman has always been a favourite figure of fantasy fashioning for our films. Who can forget Nargis gunning down her own son in Mehboob Khan’s “Mother India”? The motivations for revenge... Read more...
Housefull 2 – Movie Review

Gags galore. Laughs? Well, not as many as you’d expect in a 180-minute marathon mirth machine. Somehow, the jokes get choked in the comic ritual of repetition. Once you figure out who’s who and who’s ha-ha in the farce fest, the attempts to... Read more...
Not a Love Story- move review
alt
A camera permanently looking up at Mahie Gill's legs. A murder and then a butcher's knife. A ponderous police officer played by Zakir Hussain. The Rangeela song played on a ringtone. There are a lot of familiar Ram Gopal Varma elements in Not a Love Story. But what is new is the relationship between Emile/Robin (Deepak Dobriyal) and Maria/Anu (Mahie Gill).

He loves her and so does she-she slept with Ashish Bhatnagar/Neeraj Grover (Ajay Gehi) in a weak moment, where he is fortunately not shown as a lecherous producer/movie executive and she is not shown as someone on the make. The dynamics of a group of young people from various parts of India who've come to Mumbai to look for work in the movies-is something Varma knows well, having observed so many people with stars in their eyes and dreams of Bollywood in their hearts.

And he shows us some things from another perspective. Men and women can love each other and still do crazy things that hurt. Parents can be shocked by what their children are capable of. And a lot can go on in a city like Mumbai which can get lost in the crowd. The tall half constructed buildings, the anonymous office crowds, the friends who stick up for each other, it's an interesting mix. And there are little touches: Robin holding Anu's head up so she doesn't have to see Ashish's body, naked and in a pool of blood on her drawing room floor. Anu's mother calling her about getting married even as they are dumping his dismembered body in the forest. And the policewoman slapping Anu to get her to confess.

It's Varma's old hunting ground-there's an animal inside each of us. And if you have the stomach for it, it's worth a watch.
