Here’s a good point to awaken your conscience next time you think about buying a pirated DVD. Indian consumers buy 700 million pirated DVDs every year and this creates a loss of $959 million to the Indian film industry.
Two of the major movie industries in the Hollywood and Bollywood have united to form a coalition to ward off piracy in India. The Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) has teamed up with India’s leading production houses with a view to eradicate movie piracy which has been eating into the business of both English and Hindi movies.
MPAA chairman Dan Glickman has expressed his concern over the fact that pirated DVDs enter the Indian market even before the movie reaches theatres. Bollywood film-maker Yash Chopra said: "The Indian film industry loses millions of dollars every year due to piracy. India is also among the top 10 countries in the world when it comes to this crime. We need government support to implement stricter rules to prevent people from going to watch movies in cinemas with camcorders for copying purposes. If someone is caught, it should be a non-bailable offence."
UTV Motion Pictures, Reliance Big Entertainment and YashRaj Films are the major Indian production houses who have joined the league.
