Gags galore. Laughs? Well, not as many as you’d expect in a 180-minute marathon mirth machine. Somehow, the jokes get choked in the comic ritual of repetition. Once you figure out who’s who and who’s ha-ha in the farce fest, the attempts to... Read more...
Aasmaan - Blue sequel with Akshay Kumar and Katrina Kaif
Monday, 26 October 2009 06:37
The $30 million Bollywood action flick Blue is still on its long way to the box office hit status. But the makers of the movie are so much excited about the huge opening that it received that they are planning to make a sequel.
Tentatively titled Aasmaan (the sky), the sequel will have a longer list of stars and leading the pack will be Akshay Kumar and Katrina Kaif. Katrina who had a cameo in the first movie will have a full-fledged role in Aasmaan.
The rest of the cast comprises of Sanjay Dutt, Zayed Khan and Lara Dutta reprising their roles and Neha Uberoi will join them as Zayed Khan’s love interest. Director Anthony D’Souza is also keen to rope in John Abraham and Sonal Chauhan for the mega budget second installment. He confirmed the news and said, “I really want to work with John. All I can say is the producers are ready to back me with my next project with the same budget as ‘Blue’. It will start off as an undersea adventure and then move to the sky.”

So the blue sequel will start off with scuba diving and then move on to skydiving. Moving to the skies will definitely mean dozens to skydiving sequences, parachuting and aircraft to aircraft jumps. Akshay has done a bit of that in the past. But with the new methods of action film making, they’ll be more spectacular this time. Aerial action will definitely throw up a riskier list of challenges for the cast and crew as it is more dangerous than shooting underwater. Action is expected to be more rapid than the slow underwater sequences in Blue.

But we seriously doubt whether Sanjay Dutt would be an apt choice as a cast member in this prospective franchise. In Blue, he looked absolutely out of place in the lycra underwater gear with his overhanging paunch. As many have commented his pairing with Lara Dutta was a show spoiler. The less said the better about inane dialogues which the actors had to mouth. All that we can do is hope that Sanjubaba hits the gym and that the producers spend a fraction of that budget on hiring writers who are skilled. That may literally take Aasmaan to the skies.

About pop-singer cameos, Kylie Minogue was a no-show in Blue and got lots of flack for her weak performance. We prefer someone who is better known here in India. Shakira is a fine option.

Blue is taking the Dhoom route as one of Bollywood’s action franchises. But we have our own deductions about Aasmaan. Do we smell a bit of an aerial version of Dhoom/The Fast and the Furious in the air (pun intended)? A mid-air heist specialist (John) being pursued by the self-centered rich guy (Akshay) and the righteous poor guy (Sanjay) for some reason for which the poor guy’s unruly younger brother (Zayed) is responsible – that does sound more like a basic plotline of Aasmaan a.k.a Blue 2. We are just speculating. Do let us know if you have your own versions.
