There are Bollywood movies and there are Bollywood movies which are carbon copies of Hollywood movies. From inspired scenes to copied action sequences to frame by frame replicas, Bollywood’s admiration for its US counterpart has been there for a long time. But Hollywood itself copies from other language movies. So why is this eye-opening lecture so relevant now? In 2002, a crime-action drama from Hong Kong made box office history in the country. Titled Infernal Affairs, the movie was about a rookie undercover cop assigned to collect evidence against a crime lord and young cop who was in fact a mole sent by the crime lord to spy on the police. With each side desperate to draw out the mole at their end, both men engage in a game of deception and take the road never tread before to maintain their cover. Their paths cross in various ways including their affair with the same woman, a psychiatrist. In 2006, Martin Scorcese remade the flick with Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon, Jack Nicholson, Marc Walhberg, Martin Sheen and Alec Baldwin. It went on to win 4 Academy Awards including Best Picture and Best Director. In 2009, we hear that Vishal Bharadwaj (Omkara, Kaminey) will be remaking it in Hindi. The initial words convey that Hrithik Roshan will be playing the role of the rookie undercover cop (played by DiCaprio in The Departed). Hrithik will begin shooting for the film from June 2010 after he wraps up the schedule of Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Guzaarish. The rest of the cast is yet to be confirmed. But we hear that Neil Nithin Mukesh, Saif Ali Khan and Abhishek Bachchan are in the run for the role of the cop who is the crime lord’s mole (played by Matt Damon in The Departed). Priyanka Chopra had mentioned in an interview that she’ll be involved in one more project with Bharadwaj. If it’s this movie, then she may play the role of the common love interest of the two male leads. The Departed was set in Boston and the remake will be set in Mumbai. There are many names which are coming up for the role of the crime lord which was essayed with sadistic energy by Jack Nicholson in the Hollywood remake. Amitabh Bachchan and Amol Gupte (played Bhope Bahu in Kaminey) are two current favourites. When we exercised out prediction skills, we came up with a dream cast for this crime drama. Our dream cast for the remake is as follows.
