Aamir Khan has outdone himself again. With Ghajini he had rewritten box office record books and with 3 Idiots he wrote a new record book itself. The strong showings in multiplexes and single screens in India and abroad have earned the comedy the status of an all time blockbuster. Aamir confirmed in his blog that his latest movie has surpassed the collections of Ghajini and that too within 10 days since its release. 3 Idiots had made news earlier for collecting Rs. 1 billion in 4 days, setting new records in opening day, opening week end and opening week collections.
We wouldn’t choose to take away even an atom of the actor’s excitement by attempting to rephrase what he stated in his blog. "In less than 10 days 3i has overtaken the ENTIRE business of GHAJINI!!!! India, Overseas, everywhere!!! And is still going strong," says Aamir in his blog. Ghajini had raked in Rs. 2.25 billion before it was pulled from theatres and 3 Idiots sped past that landmark in 10 days with the current total way north of Rs. 2.4 billion ($51 million). It earned close to $5 million from its shows in the US and that too from a rather ordinary theatre count of 120. 3 Idiots now holds the record of the highest Bollywood earner in the US. Based on Chetan Bhagat's best-seller "Five Point Someone", 3 Idiots did benefit from its merits as a well-directed light-hearted coming of age movie with elements of nostalgia and the innovative marketing campaign powered by Aamir. The star values of Aamir and the director Rajkumar Hirani, the holiday season and the controversies surrounding it, the latest one being a case of ragging helped it as well. Critical reaction is positive and the rock steady collections does show promise of taking it past that tempting Rs. 3 billion barrier. - Sanjoy Alexander is a contributing writer to a leading Indian magazine.
