February didn’t have many star-studded releases compared to the previous month. Well, there was My Name Is Khan and Teen Patti, the former starring SRK and the latter starring Big B and Ben Kingsley. Other than MNIK the rest of the releases including Farhan Akhtar’s Karthik Calling Karthik didn’t succeed in making a significant at the BO Striker starring Siddharth (remember him for Rang De Basanti?) was a wash-out from day one. It didn’t even take a proper initial and nobody knew when it came and went. Oh...and it was released on YouTube as well. Verdict: We think we have crucified it already. My Name Is Khan, SRK’s dream project with generous involvement from American studios charged up the BO with a thunderbolt. Interestingly, it was a hit much before it got released as the distributors paid up Rs. 1 billion for the rights. The movie broke collection records all over the globe and the mixed reviews from the press didn’t slow its pace a wee bit. Many consider it to be worthy enough to beat 3 Idiots in the collections chart. The movie has roped in close to Rs. 2 billion crore till now. Verdict: Worldwide Blockbuster Toh Baat Pakki (with Tabu) and Click (with Shreyas Talpade) were equally disappointing and despite the low budgets couldn’t recover the investments. Verdict: Predictably, flops. Farhan Akhtar-starrers have an inherent delectability which makes them much endearing to the multiplex audiences. Even his charm couldn’t help Karthik Calling Karthik survive at the BO. The reviewers rated it as an average movie and some of them did give it a thumbs-up. Deepika Padukone was paired opposite Farhan in KCK and her presence didn’t pull in the crowd, surprisingly. It may recover its costs, though anything more than that is highly unlikely. Verdict: Strictly average Teen Patti was rumoured to be a remake of the Hollywood casino flick, 21 which by the way isn’t the best of movies. The game of cards and the tricks on the table didn’t quite impress the masses or the multiplex loyalists. It has bombed all over the country and will go down as one of the biggest flops in Big B’s career. This was not the response that Ben Kingsley had in mind when he decided to sign in for the movie. Verdict: We couldn’t find a better word than “bomb”.
