Underworld has always had an influence on Bollywood – on and off the screen. Leaving the off-screen context for a while, we’ll take a look at the current on-screen impact of the theme. We are referring to Milan Luthria’s Ajay Devgn-Emraan Hashmi-Kangana Ranaut starrer Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai. The crime thriller which is loosely based on the crime saga of real world dons Haji Mastan and Dawood Ibrahim chronicles rise of the Mumbai underworld in the 70’s. Proving that underworld dramas sell like hot cakes in India, the movie has grossed Rs. 450 million in two weeks since its release. Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai had a glorious opening week which brought in Rs. 350 million with ease. This is Ajay Devgn’s third hit in a row after after Athithi Tum Kab Jaoge and this year’s highest grossing movie, Rajneeti. The word of mouth has been positive for Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai and the critics have also given it a thumbs up. The movie is here to stay for some time and does look promising for a Rs. 600 million+ finish.
