Are we obsessed with Dabangg? We are not. On the contrary, we think it is not as well put together as Wanted was, though it does have all the ingredients of a masala-entertainer with stunts that defy the laws of physics and the limitations of logic.
The storyline hasn’t got anything new to offer and the whole movie is resting on the shoulders of the bravado of its lead character Chulbul Pandey played by Salman Khan. Is he the best of all actors in Bollywood to carry the weight forward and make a blockbuster out of this movie? Not surprisingly he is. With witty dialogues and his irresistible charm, the bad boy of Bollywood hurled the movie to heights of box office success which the industry hasn’t seen in a long time.
That’s why Dabangg ripped apart record books when released and that’s why it collected more money than Wanted did in its entire run and that’s why it grossed a massive Rs. 1 billion (Rs. 100 crores) in 10 days. What has to be noted here is that this figure doesn’t include the excellent overseas collections. Areas like Bihar, Delhi/UP, East Punjab, Central India, Assam, Orissa, Rajasthan, and CP Berar contributed the most to the success of Dabangg. The flick did take a beating in territories like Mumbai, Tamil Nadu/Kerela, West Bengal, Mysore, and Nizam/Andhra where it couldn’t hammer the record set by 3 Idiots. With literally no competition around and powered by positive word of mouth publicity, Dabangg can be seen as a strong hold-over even when Rajnikanth and Shankar’s tour de force – Robot – releases on October 1.
