Anjaana Anjaani may have whooped Robot/Endhiran on its posterior in the northern circuit. But that wasn’t even a matter of concern for the Rajinikanth vehicle from amassing what is beyond doubt the largest opening week takings for an Indian movie in recent times. The Indian box office collection for the three versions added up to Rs. 1.17 billion in the opening week. The previous record holder was Dabangg with its Rs. 850 million collections in 7 days. Rajini’s charm also worked in raking in an extraordinary Rs. 620 million from the opening weekend alone. “The film has got a net collection of Rs 60 crore in TN, Rs 30 crore in AP, Rs 8 crore in Karnataka, Rs 4 crore in Kerala and Hindi version Robot Rs 15 crore. Looking at the trend the film has crossed Dabaang’s two weeks net collection in its first week itself,” says Suniel Wadhwa, distributor of Enthiran. By the time it reached the end of its second week of running, the movie has collected all of Rs. 2 billion and has shown no signs of lethargy. The excitement still remains as viewers are opting for multiple viewing to savour more of the visual treat that director Shankar has put up for display. The overwhelming charisma of Rajinikanth and the popularity of Aishwarya Rai Bachchan has definitely played a significant part in the movie’s crowd-pulling potential. Though the Hindi version Robot didn’t take off with the same surge as its Tamil counterpart, the makers do claim that the response that it has received is the by far the best for any dubbed film in the north.
